Walking in Someone Else’s Shoes: Developing Empathy Through Children’s Literature

In our current world today, we need to support our students in developing empathy for others who have experiences different from themselves, but yet who have the very same human needs and feelings. In this presentation, we will share a variety of children’s literature selections, and corresponding activities that can be used with elementary students (K-5) to develop a sense of empathy for others. We will provide booktalks and lesson plan ideas for both picture books and novels, that could be used for read-alouds or literature circles. Walk away with literature lists and activities that can immediately be put into place in your classroom to encourage your students to “walk in someone else’s shoes!”
